Many of the Japanese vocalization cast from Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2 returned to reprise their roles in the game, with the notable exception of Kōji Totani, the vocalization actor of Revolver Ocelot, who passed away in February 2006. Totani was replaced by Liquid Ophidian's Japanese voice role player Banjō Ginga. Houko Kuwashima and Kikuko Inoue too reprise their roles of Mei Ling and Rosemary, respectively, and Inoue also voiced a new character, Sunny, the girl of Olga Gurlukovich. Japanese flick director Shinya Tsukamoto provides the vocalism for Vamp, replacing Ryōtarō Okiayu. An elderly EVA also appears, and is voiced by singer Mari Natsuki.

The English voice interim was recorded under voice managing director Kris Zimmerman. All the notable vocalism actors and actresses reprise their roles from previous titles (e.g. David Hayter every bit Solid Snake).

Cam Clarke, who provided Liquid Snake'south voice, was not office of the cast, just tin exist heard in flashbacks through archived vocalism samples. The function of Liquid Ocelot was given to Patric Zimmerman, Revolver Ocelot'southward voice actor. Kris Zimmerman, denying allegations of nepotism, has clarified that Kojima always intended for the character to use Ocelot'south vox.

New characters include artillery dealer Drebin, his pet monkey Little Grey, Rat Patrol Squad 01, under the command of Meryl Silverburgh, and the Beauty and the Fauna Unit.

Meryl, Ed, and Jonathan use the SOP system to share each other's senses via the nanomachine network inside their bodies. Unknown to the rest of Rat Patrol however, Akiba does not every bit he is "scared of needles" and did non go through with receiving the nanomachines, causing him to be less efficient in the battlefield. Meryl introduces the team as "Rat Patrol Team 01" and states that they are investigating PMC activity with the U.Southward. Army CID. Ed and Jonathan take their names from the master characters in Kojima's Policenauts, from which Meryl besides originally gained her name. Information technology is revealed in the conclusion of Metal Gear Solid 4 that, similar Drebin, "Rat Patrol Team 01" was nonetheless another programme past the Patriots to suppress the growing threat of Liquid Ocelot. Such tin can be seen when re-arranging the messages of "RAT PT 01" (the mutual abbreviation for the team) the give-and-take "Patriot" (PATR10T) is revealed. Four new bosses are also introduced: Crying Wolf, Raging Raven, Screaming Mantis, and Laughing Octopus, of The Beauty and the Beast Unit. Their animal names openly reference characters from Metallic Gear Solid'south FOXHOUND unit and the emotions relating to the Cobra Unit from Metallic Gear Solid 3. Themes

Themes of the previous numerical Metal Gears up to four.

The chief theme of Metal Gear Solid 4 is "Sense" – someone's agreement of the world that is lost when they die.[six] Throughout the Japanese version, the word "will" is super-titled every bit "SENSE." Nevertheless, this is translated but as "will" in the English version. This theme is prominent throughout the game, from Serpent'southward try to empathize Naomi's intentions to the misguided try of Nothing to follow The Boss'southward volition, and JD to follow his. In all of these cases, the private's original intent and sense of the globe is questioned and unclear and seemingly is deliberately left for the audience to answer.

The earth'southward growing reliance on applied science is one of many secondary themes. This tin can exist seen through Rat Patrol, who, when introduced, were a highly synchronized squad due to their nanomachines, but were helpless when the the organization was hacked. While previous games were based around the threat of a single machine, Metallic Gear Solid 4 depicts a number of machines, nigh notably the Gekkos as commonplace. The members of The Beauty and the Beast Unit of measurement rely on their mechanical suits to cope with their trauma, while Naomi and Vamp are kept alive by their nanomachines.

The game deals with the trauma acquired by war. Many soldiers seen in the game suffer from PTSD, and many of the characters have had state of war forced upon them. Raiden'southward regained memories of his fourth dimension every bit a child soldier made him unstable. He couldn't tolerate reality and became an alcoholic who ran away from home. The Beauty and the Creature Unit all suffered from PTSD and each dealt with a split up emotion created and guided by fear, the personification of which is their leader, Screaming Mantis. Each Dazzler's emotion is based on how they suppressed their fears when going through the traumatic events that shaped them. The Beauties were all haunted by the events which happened in their youth. Ophidian experiences a bully deal of trauma throughout the events of the game, and is still dealing with the traumatic events of his by. The stamina bar of Metal Gear Solid iii was replaced past the Psyche Gauge which measures Snake's mental health. The gauge is affected by flashbacks, the actions of other characters, temperature and stress. When Snake is psychologically weak he tin can not recover physically. While The Dazzler and the Beast Unit succumb to, and are ruled by their trauma, Ophidian and Raiden accept and overcome theirs and go along to live out their lives in peace.

A recurring concept was "Haven". Ocelot was to fulfill Big Boss's dream of a haven for soldiers. The Patriot AI, GW, was too considered a data haven, safe from the optics of its creators due to the events of the Big Shell Incident, which left information technology disconnected from the other AI. In a tweet posted in April 2010 Kojima revealed that he chose this as a theme because of his son talking about the HavenCo data processing company that was considered the smallest sovereign nation in the world and made headlines during Metal Gear Solid four'southward development.

Gameplay

Erstwhile Snake wearing the OctoCamo.

In Metal Gear Solid 4, the player must navigate the game earth in gild to progress. Using the serial' traditional tertiary person view with full photographic camera manipulation, it allows the freedom to play in first-person manner or over-the-shoulder view.  The shoulder view is switchable from right shoulder to left for like shooting fish in a barrel corner maneuvering. A key change is that the CQC system has been completely revamped.

Several elements from previous titles return in modified forms. The player uses a new course of cover-up called "OctoCamo". The OctoCamo suit allows the wearer to blend in with any surface within a few seconds. A new monocular device called "Solid Eye" replaces the various binoculars and prototype intensifiers from previous titles. Similar to Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid 4 contains a model viewer that allows Snake to change the pattern of the OctoCamo manually as long equally the histrion saves the camouflage. Only as in Metal Gear Solid three, Snake tin can be made to vomit past spinning him in the model viewer.

Onetime Snake with Metal Gear Mk. Two.

A major item in the game is the Metallic Gear Mk. 2 (and later, the Mk. Iii), a robotic drone which allows him to communicate with other characters, in addition to the Codec radio system from previous games. It is also capable of engaging enemies using an electric stupor, as well as providing reconnaissance. This drone is reminiscent of Gillian Seed's robotic sidekick Metallic Gear Mk. II from the game Snatcher.

Due to the lack of a rumble feature during much of the PlayStation 3 development, the game has been designed with a new feature: a white "threat ring" that visibly vibrates when audio is made nearby.[7] The threat ring was retained even after rumble was implemented adding to the feedback bachelor during gameplay.

Snake assaulting an enemy.

If injured on the battlefield, cuts and burns will remain on Serpent'due south skin. The developers wanted to avoid putting the stress of Snake's age on the player, and gave him a musculus arrange, allowing the thespian to move in a similar way to previous games.

A new "Psyche Gauge" which replaces the stamina meter that appeared previously. The Psyche Gauge functions equally an assessment of Snake's psychological state. If Ophidian is in a combat situation, then his adrenaline will increase, and he can fire rounds off faster and receive less damage. However, if Snake is near something that smells bad or hears something debilitating in a cutscene, then the meter will lower making Snake's accurateness and movement speed decrease appropriately until it can exist replenished. The Soliton Radar is no longer used by Snake, but the Solid Eye acts equally a "Baseline Map" that responds to Snake's "presence."[vii]

Evolution

Hideo Kojima's newly-formed Kojima Productions, a subsidiary of Konami, developed Metal Gear Solid 4.

Metallic Gear Solid 4 was first appear at a 2005 Sony press conference shortly before E3 2005, alongside the "No Place to Hide!" slogan. Initially, Kojima announced that he would be retiring equally director of the Metal Gear series afterwards Metal Gear Solid 3, and would exit his position open to another person for Metal Gear Solid 4, as he did later on Metallic Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2. Equally a joke, the new director was appear every bit "Alan Smithee", but in R, a 400-page book bundled with Metal Gear Solid 3's Japanese Premium Package, the director was revealed to exist Shuyo Murata, co-writer of Metallic Gear Solid 3 and director of Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner. He also contributed past including humorous Easter eggs in Metallic Gear: Ghost Babel and Metal Gear Solid 2.

At E3 2005, Kojima announced that he would be writing, producing, and directing the game alongside Muratya afterward substantial negative fan reaction, which included death threats.[eight] He besides announced that his newly-created studio owned by Konami, Kojima Productions, would be developing the game. Kojima besides showed a trailer for Metallic Gear Solid iv that used Metal Gear Solid 3's game engine, showing what

the game would eventually be, though he stressed that the game was all the same in early development. Kojima further stated that the game would have place several years subsequently the events of Metal Gear Solid ii and would feature an online battle mode. Kojima also announced that Meryl Silverburgh, Otacon, and Liquid Ocelot would be in the game and that Solid Serpent would be the main character, as well equally hinting that Raiden might make an appearance. Kojima also stated that the game was to include connectivity to Metal Gear Acid ii, though this was dropped equally development progressed.[ix]

In a June 2005 outcome of Japanese gaming mag Famitsu, Kojima stated that the reason that the PS3 was chosen as the format for Metallic Gear Solid 4 was that the Metal Gear serial has been brought up with Sony hardware, the Sony market, and through the support of Sony, making the choice a elementary one. Kojima also stated in the interview that he would non mind porting it to other hardware.[10] In the September 2005 issue of Famitsu, the first screenshots of the game'due south engine was revealed, showing a much older Solid Snake. A robot named Metal Gear Mk. II was likewise revealed, aslope Otacon. The magazine also featured an interview with Kojima where he stated that Raiden would exist returning and that his appearance would exist radically different. Kojima likewise mentioned that Snake would be in a state of war-zone with two groups fighting each other and that there would be a new element of "psychological warfare" featured in the game.[11]

At the 2005 Tokyo Game Show, Metal Gear Solid 4 made its get-go full appearance. The full championship of the game was appear to be Metallic Gear Solid iv: Guns of the Patriots, and a trailer for the game featuring in-game footage of the new game engine made specifically for the PS3 was shown.[12] Kojima also stated over again that Metal Gear Solid 4 would exist the last game in the Metal Gear series.[13] Kojima also showed a trailer titled Metal Gear Raiden: Serpent Eraser that featured Raiden trying to kill Big Boss so that he could accept Solid Serpent's place equally the main character in Metal Gear Solid four. Afterwards, Kojima demonstrated Metallic Gear Solid 4 running off an actual PS3 development kit with a DualShock 2 used as a controller, which revealed the existent time graphics the game would exist using. Kojima demonstrated some of the lighting and effects possible with the PS3 game engine, stating that he "always wanted to practice self-shadowing, simply couldn't" before the PS3. Yoji Shinkawa also appeared alongside Kojima, where they explained that a filtering event would be used in the game that could not exist done in the previous Metal Gear games. Kojima stated that "there'south no sense of atmosphere [in the game], so on top of this nosotros add together a metal color and arrive look similar a movie on film. Using various effects, we dirty it up." Kojima also revealed "the new Metal Gear", a one-half-living, half-machine creation. Kojima also demonstrated that Metal Gear Mk. II was being controlled by Otacon, who was far away from the battlefield. Kojima further stated that player choice would have a role in the game equally the role player would exist able to make soldiers into friends or enemies. Kojima also stated that the game's theme would be "SENSE"; previous themes in the series had been "Gene" (Metal Gear Solid), "MEME" (Metal Gear Solid ii), and "SCENE" (Metal Gear Solid 3).[xiv]

In an interview with Japanese gaming magazine Hype Magazine in September 2005, Kojima mentioned that Snake had anile so much because he was a clone of Large Boss, resulting in him aging quicker than a normal homo. Kojima as well confirmed that Ocelot would be returning and that the role player could await a fight betwixt Snake and Ocelot. He also clarified the "No Place to Hibernate" theme, where in Metal Gear Solid 4 Snake was in the center of a war zone where battles were mutual and where buildings were damaged and destroyed, leaving Serpent with situations where there really was no place to hide. The phrase also had another meaning where the role player might decide there was no reason to hide. Kojima explained that Serpent might find himself betwixt two groups, and that it was possible that a 3rd and a quaternary grouping would also engage in the boxing. Snake could then choose to brand an alliance with the groups to infiltrate other groups, making information technology and then that hiding was not a requirement. Kojima antiseptic the "psychological warfare" he previously mentioned; he described the deportment of the enemies in previous Metal Gear games to be unrealistic, as the enemies appeared to be common cold killing machines. Metal Gear Solid 4 would alter this in that standard soldiers are psychologically weak, and by surprising them with a dissonance, the thespian tin reduce their preparedness for boxing.[15]

At Konami'southward E3 2006 press conference, Kojima Productions showed a new trailer for the game that demonstrated OctoCamo, a cover-up system Ophidian would use in the game. OctoCamo acted like an octopus, where information technology would change the texture of Snake's suit to match the environment. The trailer also revealed Ocelot, Meryl, Naomi Hunter, and Raiden.[16] In the May 2005 upshot of Famitsu, Kojima stated that Metal Gear Solid 4 would wrap-upwards the whole Metal Gear story and that "we'll articulate up all mysteries in four and, in the end, after this, volition Ophidian die!?" Kojima also said that "nearly all the characters from the Metallic Gear Solid games would brand an appearance" and that gameplay from Metal Gear Solid iii would render in Metallic Gear Solid iv. Kojima gave an instance of OctoCamo, proverb that if Snake was standing side by side to a wall worn out with holes, he too would appear to accept holes. Kojima farther confirmed that the game would characteristic online play, stating that "the online in Subsistence was simply the preparation for 4."[17]

At the 2006 Tokyo Game Show, Kojima stated that Kojima Productions had done a lot of research for the development of the game. They went through military training and traveled to unlike parts of the world to develop the settings for Metal Gear Solid 4 and showed photos of the Middle East which closely resembled the setting for the trailers. Kojima farther stated that the game would have 3D models created from existent people through 3D capturing. Kojima confirmed that Harry Gregson-Williams would render to compose the game's soundtrack, and that the game's logo was made by Logan, a group of artists that has worked on contempo Madonna and U2 videos.[eighteen] Regarding Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, which was nevertheless in development, Kojima stated that "if you alter the Ops story, you have to alter 4. If you alter four, it as well becomes necessary to change Ops. Until Ops is finished, four's story tin can't be finalized."[19] On a related note, Ryan Payton in a afterwards interview elaborated that another reason for the delay in finalizing the story for 4 was due to the 24 hour news cycle, specifically that Hideo Kojima'due south development squad due to a change in stride by trying to spend more fourth dimension focusing on current events (specifically, the War in Iraq, the State of war in Transitional islamic state of afghanistan, Rwanda, and various other instances where PMCs were being hired, without even including Blackwater) spent a lot of time constantly altering the story fifty-fifty when literally days from finalizing the story due to stories told by news outlets such as NHK.[20]

In March 2007, it was announced that David Hayter, Quinton Flynn, Paul Eiding, and Christopher Randolph would be returning to reprise their roles as Solid Ophidian, Raiden, Roy Campbell, and Otacon, respectively.[21] In July 2007, Kojima appear Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus and Metal Gear Online.[22] In August 2007, Kojima announced the Beauty and the Animal Unit volition exist the main enemies in the game. The unit consists of four females – Laughing Octopus, Raging Raven, Crying Wolf, and Screaming Mantis – who were empowered with special, unique abilities and had individual backstories which outline how they had became the beings they are. All 4 of the women were born out of innocence, merely were transformed by the horrors of war into beasts, physically and mentally. The game would also exist set across various stages, including the Middle East and S America equally Solid Snake, at present "Sometime Snake", had been asked to electrocute Liquid Ocelot. The game would besides feature an upgraded CQC arrangement showtime introduced in Metallic Gear Solid 3.[23]

In January 2008, Ryan Payton stated that the game was almost completed and was about to go through beta testing. On February 28, Konami announced that the game would be released on June 12, 2008. Konami also stated that Metal Gear Online would be bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4 and that it would support upward to sixteen players. To promote the game, Konami announced that people who pre-ordered the game would receive a DVD titled Metal Gear Saga Vol. ii which contains a prologue recapping the franchise, a 20th ceremony retrospective, character bios, and a collection of trailers for Metal Gear Solid iv. It was also revealed that beta testing for Metal Gear Online would terminal for approximately 2 weeks.[24] In March 2008, Kojima stated that the player would move between different countries in the game. However, Kojima stated that he was not entirely satisfied with the game'due south quality and that the 50 GB of data the Blu-ray Disc can concur was not plenty for the game and that the game had to be compressed for it to fit on the Blu-ray Disc.[25]

The game was originally to have featured scenes of female nudity, but these were removed in lodge to secure a lower rating. For example, the Beauty and the Animate being Unit'south Beauty forms were to accept been naked, but was changed in gild to avert the game receiving an AO rating. Similarly, a subplot of the Naomi tracking scene had Snake following a trail of female clothing, somewhen leading him to a naked female person soldier; according to the Integral Podcast, this was cut for the same reason.

On June 12, 2008, subsequently beingness in evolution for more than than 3 years, the game was finally released worldwide.

Later the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, Ryan Payton admitted that they didn't plan on continuations of the Metal Gear serial when they made Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid three, and remarked that it "was nothing short of a miracle" that they were able to tie up all the loose ends.[26] Payton stated that they had a dandy deal of freedom in their delineation of PMCs due to the private armed forces world being somewhat unknown. He went on to explain that they had to exist careful to avert portraying the unabridged Middle East a war zone or its people as terrorists.[26] Co-ordinate to KazRadio, Kojima didn't plan on making Metallic Gear Solid 4 and just did and so because the fans wanted the pursuit of the Patriots due to Metal Gear Solid 2.

A game that dealt with the documentaries and making of Metal Gear Solid four, called The Document of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, was originally to accept been produced but it was ultimately cancelled.

Trophies

From the day the game was released, Kojima Productions fabricated no effort to add together trophies to the game. This resulted in many fans sending e-mails to the developers to convince them to patch the game with trophies. On March 3, 2009, a Konami employee stated on the official PlayStation blog:

"On the field of study of MGS4/MGO trophies and Konami ID - we hear you. Nosotros have been circulating these bug internally, and we volition study back every bit soon as we are able."

Several months later, on Baronial 7, 2009, Sean Eyestone stated:

"But to address ane issue that we've been getting a lot of comments about. And this is, of course, about trophies. I just wanna tell everybody out in that location right now that your voices are being heard and that nosotros're not ignoring you. We hear everything that you are saying. It's just that we can't say anything only nonetheless. Simply equally soon as we have something to say, we will denote information technology. So, if we can merely inquire everyone to simply be patient, we will requite you an answer. Only right now we tin't say anything. So nosotros merely inquire for everyone's understanding with that and simply ask for everybody to remain patient and we'll let y'all know."

This led to speculation that an updated version of Metallic Gear Solid 4 would be released, similar to Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, along with a patch that contains trophies.

One year later on, on September 1, 2010, Hideo Kojima tweeted the following:[27]

"I wanted to brand a 'Complete Version' with bays support and 3D, but if I did that I wouldn't be able to work on a new game. I wonder if someone else would make information technology for me."

On July 11, 2012, Famitsu reported that Metal Gear Solid 4 would receive trophy support via an upcoming patch, and that the "new budget version" of Metal Gear Solid four would exist released in August of the same year.[28] In addition, to prevent people from having to look until then, the 164th Kojima Productions podcast released on July 17 detailed the creation, evolution, and eventual implementation for the trophy support.[29] On August 6, 2012, the trophy patch download was released.[30]

On November 8, 2012, it was announced that a special edition of Metallic Gear Solid 4 was being developed which had trophy support beingness pre-included on the software. It was released on Dec of the same year.

Metal Gear Solid 4 has received critical acclaim. The beginning review was a ten/10 from PlayStation Official Mag (UK), commenting "[MGS4] shifts gears constantly, innovating again and again."[39] The game has been awarded 5/five from GamePro, equally well as a 5/v from PlayStation: The Official Mag. Information technology was awarded a 40/40 past Japanese mag Famitsu, making it the eighth game to e'er earn a perfect score from the magazine.[twoscore] GameSpot also awarded the game a perfect 10 score, Metallic Gear Solid 4 being simply the 6th game to do so.[41]

The game received a 9.9/10 from IGN UK[42] and IGN Australia gave it a nine.5/ten.[43] Both Edge and Eurogamer gave the game a viii/ten.[44]

Reviewers were unanimous in blessing of the way the title continues and concludes the serial. Eurogamer stated that "Yous could not ask for a funnier, cleverer, more ambitious or inspired or over-the-top conclusion", while IGN Australia constitute that the result "refines the MGS formula and introduces just plenty new (or respectfully influenced) ideas to ensure that information technology stands on its ain every bit a game." Border ended that "it is faithful to its fans, its premise and its heart, delivering an experience that is, in so many ways, without equal." The new command scheme and shift to more than free-form, "replayable" gameplay were particularly highly praised with a few minor annoyances. The game was also lauded for its technological and creative achievements, with Edge describing Otacon as "the real star", and "a gaming revolution" while they institute the game'south score to be superior to that of many Hollywood offerings.

Criticism was levelled at the game'due south storyline, which some reviewers found disruptive although ultimately rewarding, peculiarly for fans. It was generally conceded that although the plot is intrusive, with many lengthy cutscenes, they are somewhat appropriate given their prominence in the residuum of the series, and the improver of a pause function for these story sequences was welcomed. Edge and Eurogamer alike ended that although the game represents an embodiment of the serial style, information technology ultimately fails to revitalize it, and will not win over new fans. Some fans were disappointed with the game's plot and were also slightly disappointed with the absenteeism of bays support on the game, despite trophies being introduced to the PlayStation Network after the release of the game.

Konami review limitations

Several publications have commented on limitations given to pre-release reviewers by Konami, including give-and-take on the length of cutscenes and size of the PS3 installation. These limitations take resulted in EGM delaying their review. In lieu of a review, the magazine printed a roundtable word near the game, with a proper review expected to print in the magazine and post on 1UP.com after Konami's restrictions have been lifted. Kojima Productions spokesperson Ryan Payton has since explained more specifically what the NDA restricts, and has amended "some items [that] are outdated and require more than explanation." He besides listed the length of install times, noting that the restrictions were intended to forestall spoilers regarding what occurs during the installations.

Following this statement, GameSpot published an article in which they claim they volition be unable to review the game either, challenge Konami have withheld review code because of non-compliance with the limitations. The article originally implied that the absenteeism of a review was due to their refusal to nourish the "Kick Campsite" event at Kojima Productions' offices. However they accept revised information technology to state that the Kicking Military camp was a mid-development feedback and PR do, and would not take led to a review in any example.

The limitations were of particular interest due to a widely-publicized merits past CVG that the game had "cut-scenes that approach the 90 minutes marking", misattributed to PlayStation World mag. GamePro and Ryan Payton have described this as an exaggeration.[45]

Novelization

An English language version of the novelization, titled simply as Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots, was released on June 19, 2012 by Viz Media.[47] The book itself is told from the perspective of Hal Emmerich, written by him shortly subsequently Solid Serpent'south death, in a fashion similar to the in-universe novel In the Darkness of Shadow Moses: The Unofficial Truth by Nastasha Romanenko.

Ryan Payton: But with MGS4, we've been doing a lot of research on what'southward going on recently. Recent conflicts in Rwanda, Afghanistan, Iraq, where real private military companies are beingness used to fight wars. And manifestly there'due south that whole issue with Blackwater, and that controversy. This is becoming a very relevant consequence. It'south tough for the writers, and guys like me, who are involved with the story, because new information is coming in well-nigh on a daily basis. Nosotros were literally days away from finalizing MGS4 story, and the text, and going to record it, and Hideo comes by our desks and says, "Did you meet the news on NHK today? We've got to put that in in that location likewise. Brand some kind of reference to that in the story." And we've done that. So it's very up-to-the-minute in the story, and we've been keeping lookout man of what'due south going on in the world.
